5 Benefits of Eating Sweet Potatoes

Sweet potatoes, also commonly known as yams, are an excellent and cheap ‘must-have’ addition to any packed lunch or evening dinner.

Sweet potatoes are full of nutritional goodness and add vital contents to your diet.  We all love white potatoes but substituting them for these beauties will make a huge difference in your health with noticeable effects in your body weight.

Massive Fiber Content

Sweet potatoes contain more or less double the amount of fibre found in other potatoes.  With almost 7 to 8 grams of fiber per serving, they make an excellent addition to any meal.  The high fiber content makes them slow burning which means no need to snack in-between meals.

Good for the Heart

We all know beans are good for your heart, but did you know that sweet potatoes contain massive amounts of Vitamin B6, which is crucial for the breakdown of homocysteine, which contributes to the hardening of the arteries and blood vessels.  Vitamin B6 ensures the walls of these arteries and vessels are flexible and clean allowing for blood flow and better circulation.

Manganese anyone?

Manganese is a mineral that has massive health benefits.  It’s a very important element and is used in the metabolism of carbohydrates which contributes towards healthy blood sugar levels. And better blood sugar levels means a more stabilized appetite which prevents snacking between meals.

Rich in Vitamin C & E

Antioxidants are important for the body and help to protect cells from damage caused by unstable molecules known as free radicals.  Sweet potatoes are rich in both Vitamin C and Vitamin E which are potent antioxidant vitamins that help with disease prevention and longevity.

Beta-Carotene

Another vital vitamin found in sweet potatoes is vitamin A or Beta-carotene.  This vitamin helps to internally protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays, by deflecting and repairing cell damage caused by excessive UV exposure.  Is your eye-sight letting you down?  Beta-carotene is also an excellent nutrient for your eyes and has been linked to the prevention of vision loss.
